Beginning 2025 with Intention

We hear so much about intentions, resolutions, and commitments this time of year. Marketing campaigns for Dry January, weight-loss programs, and the ubiquitous “new year, new you” slogans can overshadow the quieter self-reflection that the winter season invites.

But we're skeptics—we know how fleeting this temporary motivation can be, especially without immediate results. Resolutions fail, and we keep searching for that thing we think will bring satisfaction or happiness. Buddhist teachings remind us that true happiness is independent of external circumstances, and that the majority of our suffering comes from endless wanting, craving, and attachment.

So why am I telling you about setting intentions? Because planting a meaningful seed—one not tied to appearances or 30-day challenges, but to what truly matters—can keep us grounded, connected to our values, and present with ourselves and those we love. The cycle of attachment and craving can be healed, learned from, and transformed, by committing to a true practice of commitment.

I think of an intention as a direction to orient your heart toward. A commitment or declaration of what’s most important to you, something you can bring your fullest self to. It helps cut through the noise and distractions of life—like hearing your name in a chaotic room, a clear intention or commitment reminds you of your deepest values and the future you want to create through regular practice—not for some future attainment, but through a daily practice of re-orienting toward the qualities we want to embody.
